Governance
Texas Nurses Association is a membership-based organization governed by a House of Delegates (HOD). The HOD meets annually and is made up of 100+ delegates representing TNA's 29 state-wide districts.
Implementation of resolutions and bylaws adopted by the HOD is overseen by TNA's elected Board of Directors (BOD) and carried out by the more than 300 members who serve on TNA committees, task forces and ad hoc groups, or who represent TNA to other state-wide professional organizations, or as appointees to committees and task forces of other groups such as the Board of Nursing and the Texas Nursing Workforce Data Center. TNA membership also elects a 17-member delegation to represent them at the American Nurses Association's (ANA) House of Delegates.
The House of Delegates uses the following to assist them in setting the direction for the association:
-
Reports from the core structural units of the association - this includes committees, task forces and TNA appointees to state-wide groups.
-
Reports from TNA's national and state-wide affiliates - ANA, Center for American Nurses (The Center), and TNA's 29 state-wide districts.
-
Reports from TNA's internal affiliates - Texas Nurses Foundation, Texas Peer Assistance Program for Nurses, Nurse Oncology Education Program, RN/APN PAC, NACES Plus Foundation, Inc., and Ready Texas Nurses.
-
Input from individual members.
Any member or membership group may submit proposed resolutions or proposed bylaws amendments to the TNA Resolutions or Bylaws Committees for possible consideration by the TNA House of Delegates.
In accordance with the TNA HOD-adopted election policies, an annual election is held to fill open positions on the Board of Directors, Nominating Committee, and Delegates to ANA. The Official Call for Nominations is issued each September.
The TNA Board of Directors holds an annual strategic planning session to identify TNA's strategic direction, to determine what resources are needed to carry out the House of Delegate's directives, and to continue the ongoing work of the association. The Board issues a call to serve to members in May of each year, and utilizes the information provided by members to make appointments to TNA's various committees, task forces, liaison and coalition representatives.
