Regulation and Accountability
A profession has several characteristics including a beneficial social function, a unique knowledge base, a service orientation, competence standards, and self-governance. As professionals, nurses are regulated by the Texas Board of Nursing. We are also responsible to hold ourselves accountable for professional standards merely by virtue of being designated a professional. This means nurses must be knowledgable about laws and regulations governing nursing practice and must maintain competency in our area of nursing practice.
Legal resources for nurses are available from the Center for American Nurses. Your TNA membership includes Center membership and full access to membership resources!
