This course provides the RN with knowledge of federal guidelines concerning protecting detailed and personal patient medical information and how to stay compliant with Health Insurance Privacy and Portability Act (HIPAA) guidelines on a daily basis. This web based activity will increase the RNs knowledge of how to secure selected components of patient confidential medical information whether it is verbal, electronic or paper form.

To benefit patient care, RNs will be able to maintain and enhance a positive patient/nurse relationship by providing a private and confidential practice setting. The focus of this web based activity will be on the privacy and security rules of the Title II provision of the Health Insurance Privacy and Portability Act (HIPAA).  Examples of breaches and "how to" report breaches and the consequences of noncompliance will be presented. This continuing nursing education activity was approved by the Texas Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.
