TNA & the History of Nursing in Texas

The Texas Nurses Association goes way back all the way to 1907 when 19 Texas nurses met to organize a state association of graduate nurses in El Paso. It was expanded to include and advocate for all nurses. TNA played a pivotal role in first establishing nurse licensure, standards of practice, educational curriculum, and fundamental protections for nurses and patients in Texas ever since.

On this page you will find an archival documents related to TNA's history as an organization and nursing's history in Texas. What nurses take for granted today may not be rooted as far in the past as you might think.
