About Texas Nurses Foundation

The Texas Nurses Foundation is the charitable, professional, and scholarly arm of the Texas Nurses Association. Proceeds from charitable gifts are administered by TNF to support activities that promote health care by enhancing the art and science of nursing.

The Texas Nurses Foundation funds a variety of activities including grants for nurses, Texas Team, nursing related research and, the largest TNF program, the Texas Peer Assistance Program for Nurses. TPAPN offers the opportunity for RNs and LVNs to find their way through the challenges of substance abuse and/or mental illness.

Grants Available for Nurses

The Nursing Policy Research Grant Program supports research specifically on policy initiatives backed by TNA. TNA CEO Cindy Zolnierek established the Nursing Policy Research Grant program in 2016 with a pledge of $10,000 over five years based on her belief in the importance of research-level policy inquiry that can inform policy initiatives to improve nursing education and practice and contribute to safe, quality patient care. Donate to Research Grants.

Congratulations to the 2018 TNF Nursing Policy Research Grant recipient: Jessica G. Smith, PhD, RN, a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing. Read about her outcomes in the Fall 2018 issue of Texas Nursing.

Texas Team

The Texas Team is our state's action coalition, cosponsored by TNA and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas. The Texas Team believes that all Texans deserve better care, better health and lower health costs. Donate to Texas Team.

Care for the Caregiver

Care for the Caregiver Following Traumatic Events is a program funded by Johnson & Johnson Foundation to provide education and resources to nurses who need to work during disaster situations. This series of videos and collection of evidence-based methods helps nurses prepare before disasters, learn to handle disasters as they happen and understand PTSD and the role of resiliency in recovering after a disaster.

American Nurses Foundation Scholarship

In Fall 2018, the Texas Nurses Foundation awarded two $1,000 academic scholarships made possible through the American Nurses Foundation Advocacy Scholarship Program (by the generosity of Fresenius Kabi). This scholarship recognizes nurses’ exemplary advocacy efforts, whether at the bedside speaking up for a patient, in the community working to create a healthier environment, or at the state level speaking to policy makers about the legislation.

More information on the scholarship recipients coming soon.

Remembering J.L. Brown

John Levis “J.L.” Brown, long-time TNA staff member, passed away on Dec. 22, 2018 after a four-year battle with dementia. Brown began working at the Texas Nurses Association in 1972 as the Director of Communication and retired in 1996 as the Associate Executive Director. During those 24 years Brown founded TNA’s official magazine Texas Nursing in 1973 and continued to be the editor until his retirement. Read more.

TNA is collecting donations to honor Brown and his contributions. A group of past Presidents and board members have pledged to match up to $2,500 in donations. If the goal of $5,000 in donations is achieved, the funds will also sponsor a past presidents wall to recognize the leaders of our organization.
