NURSING POLICY: TNA WORKS FOR YOU!

The Texas Capitol in Austin may seem a world away from a nurse's day-to-day practice. To TNA, it’s practically home. TNA spends significant time at the Capitol advocating for nurses, the nursing profession, and quality health care for all Texans. TNA also monitors and works with the Texas Board of Nursing, other government agencies, partner nursing specialty groups, and hospitals and physician groups whenever possible. Below find more information on TNA's policy focus, legislative accomplishments, and NLAC.

Before each legislative session, TNA listens to its members, convenes the TNA Policy Council, hosts the Nursing Legislative Agenda Coalition -- comprised of many nursing specialty groups -- engages the TNA Government Affairs Committee to answer the question: What matters most to nurses, and how do we best achieve our shared goals? With input from members throughout the state, TNA identified priorities for the 85th Legislative Session. And for the first time in our history, TNA  created a professional policy book that is available to the public here and was distributed to every legislator at the Texas Capitol.

Review of 85th Legislature

After 140 days of what appeared from the outside to be a whirlwind of of testimony and debate, the 85th session of the Texas Legislature has concluded. The Texas Nurses Association was active through, working to ensure that you and your patients are protected. TNA is proud to represent you, and your government affairs staff looks forward to working throughout the next 18 months preparing for the 2019 session!

About the Interim

Even though the Texas Legislature only meets for six months of every two years, our work never stops. During the eighteen months between legislative sessions, TNA works diligently to review and update our policy positions through a dedicated network of nurse members. The TNA Policy Council develops policy positions through multiple issue-based committees and expert advisors, and issues are fully vetted over the course of the interim to end up in the TNA Policy Book.

This interim, we will be focusing on APRN issues, Nursing Education, Workplace Advocacy, Regulatory issues, and Maternal Mortality.

In addition, we will explore the ever-changing role of nurses in the new millennium and how we can find what it is that makes nurses unique to the health care experience and cement nursing in that role.

To get involved in the conversations, please fill out this form to become an expert advisor, and help us fully explore all of the issues that relate to nursing.
