In the past few weeks, COVID-19 vaccine uptake has slowed. Over 30% of the Texas population has received a vaccine, but we are still far from achieving herd immunity, and many people who received their first shot have not returned on time for their second shot. Learn more about the state of vaccination in Texas as well as strategies to help your patients feel comfortable with getting vaccinated. The presenters will also address common myths and answer your questions about the vaccines, from blood clots to the rumors about effects on fertility.

Serena Bumpus, DNP, RN, NEA-BC
Dr. Serena Bumpus, currently serves as the Director of Practice for the Texas Nurses Association where she is responsible for monitoring, evaluating and responding to evolving issues affecting nursing practice and policy in Texas. Dr. Bumpus's nursing career spans over 18 years where she has held various positions from staff nurse to Regional Director of Nursing, all in the acute care hospital setting. She received her Associates of Applied Science in Nursing from Austin Community College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Texas Tech University Health Science Center School of Nursing (TTUHSC SON), Masters of Science in Nursing Administration from TTUHSC SON and in 2019 graduated with her Doctorate of Nursing Practice in Executive Leadership from TTUHSC SON.

Kanaka Sathasivan, MPH
Sathasivan, TNA's director of communications, is an award-winning health communications expert with more than 15 years experience in strategic planning, writing, graphic design, and health education. Her career has ranged from conducting research on the influence of media and video games on health perceptions to leading the team that developed the first Texas Health and Human Services brand guide. She is an advocate for person-centered communications and trains health care professionals on best practices for writing about health topics. Sathasivan holds a Master of Public Health degree from Emory University and earned her Bachelor of Arts in English and Bachelor of Science in molecular biology from The University of Texas at Austin.
