Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning, and others of sexual or gender minority — LGBTQ+ people — face a myriad of health and health care related disparities, including higher incidence of substance use and abuse, mental health problems,
isolation in older adults and victimization, among many others. Social determinants of health and the overarching sociopolitical context of being LGBTQ+ play a significant role in these disparities. Learn more about the issues and concerns in caring
for this vulnerable population and learn strategies that nurses can use to respond to said challenges.

Presenters
Damon B. Cottrell, PhD, DNP, APRN, FNP-C, CCNS, ACNS-BC
Cottrell is Associate Dean and Associate Professor at Texas Woman's University in Denton. Over three decades, he has worked as a registered nurse and advanced practice registered nurse within emergency, acute and primary care settings, as well as in roles
including staff nurse, clinical coordinator, supervisor, clinical nurse specialist, nurse practitioner, and director, along with his academic appointments. Cottrell holds certification and licensure as an adult acute and critical care clinical nurse
specialist and as a family nurse practitioner and is a past chair of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, Certification Corporation. Cottrell has published multiple articles and presented at the local, regional and national levels about
various topics in clinical practice. He earned his diploma in nursing from the Baptist Memorial Hospital School of Nursing in San Antonio, his bachelor's and master's in nursing from TWU, and his Doctor of Nursing Practice from Robert Morris University.
He also holds a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Texas at Tyler.
Stephanie C. Evans, PhD, APRN, CPNP-PC
Evans is an assistant professor at Texas Woman’s University in Dallas. Her clinical areas begin in the neonatal intensive care and pediatric transitional care areas, before she joined the United States Air Force, spending five years as an active-duty
captain in the USAF Nurse Corps during Operation Enduring Freedom. There she expanded into women’s and children’s services, and upon completing her USAF service, began working as a primary care pediatric nurse practitioner while teaching nursing in
an undergraduate program. Evans has taught across all levels of nursing, undergraduate to doctoral students, with an emphasis on leadership, management, ethics and pediatric nursing. She is certified with the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board
and is actively involved with the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, working on the Developmental, Behavioral, and Mental Health interest group and the Youth Suicide Task Force. Evans has published articles, book chapters, editor
for clinical guides and books, and has presented at local, regional, state, national and international levels on various topics to include her research. She holds a bachelor of nursing from Texas Christian University Harris College of Nursing and
a master’s degree in child and adolescent health nursing from Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio. She earned her PhD in nursing education from The University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colorado.

The Nurse Talks Empowerment Series is designed to bring diverse groups of nurses together to engage in thoughtful conversation about important topics. Nurse Talks sessions are live webinars viewed with other nurses. After the short presentation and Q&A session, attendees will have a brief discussion with other nurses in attendance in a breakout room.
