The Texas Nurses Association commends the U.S. Supreme Court for upholding the Affordable Care Act’s tax subsidies. For more than 800,000 Texans, the court’s decision means that they will continue to receive assistance to purchase health plans through the federal insurance exchange.

“The Texas Nurses Association supports all Texans receiving the health care they need,” said Cindy Zolnierek, executive director of TNA. “Today’s decision is a victory for those individuals and families who cannot afford health insurance without the tax credits, as they will now be able to continue accessing routine preventative care.”

In 2014, as the Affordable Care Act took full effect, nationwide the share of adults without health insurance dropped to its lowest level in seven years. Prior to the Act, Texas had the highest percentage of uninsured residents in the nation. Without the tax credits—specific to those states like Texas without a state insurance exchange—many of those purchasing the health plans through the federal insurance exchange would not be able to afford health insurance, limiting their access to routine health care.

Had the court ruled against the tax credits, analysts warned that Texans purchasing health care coverage through the federal exchange would see an increase of 305 percent.
